Tamoxifen is used as an adjuvant treatment in advanced breast cancer after surgical removal to reduce the spread of the cancerous tumor.
Tamoxifen is also used as a preventive measure for breast cancer in women who have risk factors for this type of cancer. Binding to estrogen receptors on cancer cells prevents estrogen from interacting with them, thus preventing its effect on the cells, which reduces the growth of the cancerous tumor.
